Application of henna and indigo on gray hair

Useful practical information how to change gray hair into dark brown

Indigo is a plant. It grows three to five meters tall in Asia, America, and Australia. Healthy and natural organic indigo powder is produced from this indigo plant.

If your hair is gray, but you want to color it dark brown (and you want to have healthy hair, not affected by any chemicals), follow these steps:

1. One day in advance, prepare henna: mix henna powder with water; you should add some lemon juice or apple cider vinegar.

2. The following day (or a few days later), mix indigo with henna.

Mix henna powder with indigo in the following way:
two spoons of henna and four spoons of indigo (to make your gray hair dark brown).

Learn How to Prepare

Follow this step-by-step process and you will get dark brown color:

1. Prepare henna eight hours before mixing it with indigo (can be twenty-four hours or even longer - no problem).
Important!
Use only glass bowls and plastic or wooden spoons! Never use metal!
Mix henna powder with apple cider vinegar (or lemon juice).
Make henna look as thick as yogurt. Mix it well.
Cover the bowl tightly with a plastic bag or a plastic lid.
Leave it for at least 8 hours (or even a few days) for the dye to release.

2. Wash your hair with shampoo. Dry it with a towel.

3. Mix indigo powder with warm water. The water should be warm but not very hot. Water must be clean. You can boil it but let it become lukewarm.

4. Mix the henna paste with indigo paste.

5. Use thin rubber gloves. Put the mixed paste on your hair as soon as possible (put it on your hair within 15 minutes). Do not be afraid to stain your skin with the paste. You will be able to wash it well.

6. Cover your hair with a plastic bag and leave it for about four hours. If you wish, you can leave it overnight.  If you leave the paste on your hair for less than two hours, the result may be not as desired. If you leave it overnight, make sure that you do not stain your pillow. If you stain it, you will not be able to wash it out.

7. After approximately four hours, rinse your hair well with lukewarm water. Then shampoo your hair and rinse it once more.

8. Your hair is now dark brown. If you want it darker, repeat the whole process (make sure you have released henna for at least eight hours).

You should keep in mind that henna and indigo will not make your hair lighter if you repeat the above process. The more you apply it to your hair, the darker your hair will become. You can apply the mixed paste on your hair every weekend. More applications will make your hair thicker. After a few applications, you will see that you do not feel any itchiness on your scalp and it became healthier than before.

The Effect of Cassia on Hair

What is Cassia?

Cassia obovata (also known as senna obovata, cassia italica and senna italica) is a plant. It grows in eastern Africa and India. Cassia and Senna are often used as synonyms. Cassia plant powder has a lovely aroma comparable to freshly cut grass in the meadow.

Cassia contains a yellow molecule which can give white or gray hair a golden color. But it cannot make dark hair lighter. It is an excellent hair conditioner and can make your hair shiny and thick, and it is healthful for your scalp. It will keep your scalp in good condition and it will not feel itchy because cassia has antifungal and antibacterial properties. It restores damaged and chemically treated hair.

Cassia can also repair the hair that was damaged by swimming pool chlorine, chemical treatments and ultraviolet radiation (also called UV radiation) damaged hair from the sunshine.

How to Apply Cassia on Hair?

Mix cassia powder with warm water and apply it to hair. You can add lemon. It will not stain your skin. Leave it for three or four hours or you can leave it overnight. If your hair is black, it will not give any color. Cassia will condition and strengthen dark hair without changing the color. However, if your hair is gray, it will add to it a nice yellow golden tint.

If you want to dye your hair light brown, brown, dark brown or black, you should use henna and indigo.

Organic Hair Care: Foods that Promote Hair Growth

Does henna help to prevent premature hair graying?

Many hair dye producers claim that they advertise and sell 'brown henna,' 'black henna' or 'light brown henna.' They are selling a different stuff. In most cases they promote and sell chemically colored (they contain artificial colors) henna powder. We should all be aware of the fact that 'organic' stuff like ''black henna'' or ''brown henna'' does not exist in nature. The only natural and pure henna is of orange color, and the rest of it (i.e. the stuff some companies advertise and poison people) are chemical mixtures of various proportions, added to natural henna. These 'colorful henna' providers also try to prove that henna prevents premature, untimely graying. It is the most dangerous claim.

Thus, the truly alarming (and critical) big question mark is, 'Can natural (i.e. clean & pure) henna prevent your hair from premature graying?'

The genuine and straightforward response is 'NO! HENNA WILL NOT PUT A STOP TO YOUR HAIR FROM PREMATURE GRAYING!'

However, Henna will undoubtedly give color to your hair. Genuine, organic and 100% pure henna, if your hair is grayish or white, will dye your hair orange. For example, if your natural hair color is black and you start off applying henna on a regular basis, in a decade, your natural hair color will indeed turn into gray. You will notice this change as soon as you cease using henna, unless of course, you turn out to be bald. In that case, there will be no point in speaking of any color.

Henna will not protect your hair from natural graying (will not stop the graying process) but will dye your hair very nicely and in a healthy and balanced way. If you apply henna to your hair quite frequently, your hair will transform from orange to brownish and if you continue longer - to dark brown. If you combine henna with indigo, your hair will become dark brown, light brown or darkish brown. It will happen if your natural (not chemically colored) hair was white or blond. If your natural hair color is black, henna will not add color to your hair (and will not make it orange) but will make your hair healthier, stronger, more gleaming, and it will appear significantly heavier, plumper and thicker than before.

Additionally, it is worth noticing that if you put amla to henna (amla powder is also called Phyllanthus Emblica powder), mix them both and apply to your hair regularly; your hair will turn out to be even a lot more fluffy and shiny. Amla has excessive levels of vitamins and minerals, especially vitamin C which breaks up the top layer of dead skin cells and exfoliates the scalp. It refreshes your scalp and helps make your hair vibrant, radiant, healthy and balanced. However, no matter what you apply, or how often you apply, if your hair has a tendency to develop into gray (in fact, it depends on your genes), it will become gray. Henna, like many other dyes, will cover gray. The real difference between henna and most other dyes is that henna is organic. It is extremely healthful for your scalp and hair (and brain) while most other inorganic dyes are full of harmful chemical substances that will most likely cause cancer.
